چکیده

In previous communications we reported stimulation in uitro of glucose oxidation in the thyroid by thyroid-stimulating hormone and acetylcholine (1, 2). These observations have been extended to epinephrine and related compounds. Epinephrine is known to affect the physiology of the thyroid gland. Both epinephrine and norepinephrine modify thyroid blood flow and increase the release of thyroid hormone (3-5). In some of these studies, the effect of epinephrine on thyroid hormone release was felt to be independent of its action on blood flow (4, 5). In addition, administration of epinephrine in oil to dogs causes thyroid hyperplasia, although this effect may be mediated through the pituitary (6). A role of epinephrine in glucose metabolism is well established. It activates hepatic muscle and adrenal phosphorylase (7, 8) and in studies with rat epididymal fat pad it has been shown to stimulate glucose uptake and oxidation (9). However, in muscle epinephrine appears to inhibit glucose uptake (10). This report shows that epinephrine increases thyroidal glucose metabolism and offers evidence that this is due to increased oxidation of reduced forms of triand diphosphopyridine nucleotides.

Mechanism of Action of the Thyroid Hormone on the Heart

SUMMARY  The foliowing cardiac effects may be attributed to thyroxin:  1-Thyroxin augments all anaerobic processes in the body includ::ng the heart, and decreases the glycogen content of the heart ( 1, 2, 5, 27). The resistance of the heart to anoxia is increased in hyperthyroidism ( 25). 2- Thyroxin influences the cardiac weight and prevents cardiac atrophy (3, 8, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21, 30...

Further studies on effects of thyroid-stimulating hormone on thyroid glucose oxidation.

Previously we have reported that thyroid-stimulating hormone stimulates glucose-l-C4 oxidation in thyroid slices in vitro and that this effect appeared to be secondary to an increase in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate levels in the tissue (l-3). Although the effect of thyroid-stimulating hormone on glucose oxidation in vitro was apparent within 5 minutes of its addition to the thyro...

Glucose Influence on Copper Ion-Dependent Oxidation of Low Density Lipoprotein

Background: It is well established that oxidative modification of low density lipoprotein (LDL) plays a causal role in human atherogenesis and the risk of atherosclerosis is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus. We examined the in vitro effect of glucose on native and glycated LDL oxidation using copper ion dependent oxidation system. Methods: In this study, LDL was isolated from plasma...

Stimulation in vitro of glucose oxidation in thyroid by acetylcholine.

Evidence for the existence of the hexose monophosphate pathway for glucose oxidation in the thyroid has been previously rep-orted (l-3). It was also shown that thyroid-stimulating hormone stimulates the oxidation of glucose-l-Cl4 and glucase-6-U4 to Cl402 in vitro. This effect was evident within 5 minutes after adding TSH’ to thyroid slices. This early increase in glucose oxidation suggested th...

Effects of epinephrine on glucose transport and metabolism in adipose tissue of normal and hypothyroid rats.

Epinephrine increases the oxidation of glucose in adipose tissue even when its lipolytic effects are markedly reduced or abolished by propranolol, nicotinic acid, ouabain, or thyroidectomy. In order to locate the site(s) at which epinephrine stimulates glucose utilization, we studied the effects of epinephrine on the oxidation of various metabolites of glucose. Epinephrine neither increased the...
